I found a really nice free FTP utility called FileZilla, which is available on SourceForge.net at http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla. FileZilla is an amazingly full-featured file transfer utility that looks like it compares equally to the popular WS_FTP and CuteFTP file transfer utilities.
For Windows PCs, download the file with setup.exe on the right side of the file name. The last time I updated this post, the correct file to download is FileZilla_2_2_31_setup.exe. The program installed painlessly on my Windows XP PC. The FileZilla interface looks very similar to that of WS_FTP and its setup and operation is very intuitive.
It only took me a few minutes to set up and test a transfer to one of my sites. I normally use WS_FTP as my main file transfer utility, but FireZilla is so easy to use that I will likely change. The only thing missing with FileZilla is the strange sound effects built into WS_FTP that you become accustomed to hearing.
This program is worthy of a test. And if you have multiple PCs that each requires an FTP utility, it can save you money.
Although the download is completely free, there is a PayPal donation button on the site. This is one of those rare freebie programs that deserves a donation.
By the way, numerous articles on the Web refer to this program as FireZilla (as in Fire). The correct name is FileZilla.

Yes, I love Filezilla – it is simply best free ftp I ever seen. It is best of its kind and it is very simple to use and I use them all the time.

Filezlla is really very reliable except that you need to set a ‘beep’ sound each time you open Filezilla. It is very important to be prompted a ‘beep’ when work is done. But unfortunately Filezilla is not clever at this.

I am not sure if I downloaded the server but since part of my reason for getting filezilla is to make large files available to others I think I installed the server.
Now it”s been a few years since I’ve given someone files via ftp and I forget how.
I have their files up in a folder in the public folder of my filezilla. So I know they’re out there. I just forget how to set a password for the retriever and how to get them to those files.
Help?
Thanks for any assistance 🙂
