I've got to that I was a little leary of all hype going on around solar. After contemplating many programs and get options my spouce and i thought to make the leap. We ended up getting solar with no money down and then we immediatly started lowering costs the 1st month is was installed. I have to admit the benefits of solar look like real and I am happy that we decide to move forward with it.

The answer is simple. It's politics. The solutions is not so simple. The environmental lobbyists are trying to push us more toward solar and wind power, but neither are currently cost-effective nor can they come anywhere close to handling even a fraction of the overall demand for power.

I'm still waiting for at least one presidential candidate to take the lead on this issue, but I'm not holding my breath.

I really liked this article because it (I think) accurately and quickly sums up the energy problem we face today. I think that, according to the facts presented, we should make more nuclear power plants and try to switch to nuclear power as a start; however, I just don't understand why this isn't happening.

John, I think that is one subject where most Americans would agree. Unfortunately, there currently isn't any one solution or replacement for oil. The Western world's need for oil is fueling terrorism around the world, which is something that very few people predicted.

An alternative fuel for automobiles would be a good start, in addition to a multi-pronged approach to at least fractionally reduce other energy requirements. Unfortunately, none of our politicians are focused on energy solutions and businesses appear to be waiting for support from the government. Don't hold your breath for this one. I suspect that nothing will get done until we reach a crisis stage, as in the 1970s.

If the U.S. could develop and share with the world an energy source that allows us to stop relying on middle eastern oil, our current enemies would collapse for the lack of terror funds.

It is not only good for our economy and ecology to quickly get off the oil train-wreck, it will be great to see those vile countries that only export terror and hatred go hungry for a change and get humble.

I think we have viable alternatives for power, but as you said, an alternative "fuel" seems to be a ways off at best. As you stated, there are many possibilities, but with current technology limiting the yield/cost effectiveness, we just don't have the answer yet. The attempts thus far with hybrid vehicles and such should not be seen as failures though. These are just steps in evolving the technology into a practical application. I firmly believe we'll get there, but our long-held dependence has got us crippled from an innovation standpoint.
