There will not be a whole lot of new nuclear power plants built under the current administration. Obama killed the funding for the Yucca Mountain nuclear repository yesterday, even though it has just been sitting idle for many years due to political wrangling.

The next excuse for not building nuclear power plants will be the lack of a centralized storage facility. Right now the nuclear waste is being stored above ground in 121 sites. It appears to me that storing nuclear waste 1000 feet underground in storage containers designed to last 10,000 years makes more sense. Harry Reid and a lot of people in Nevada didn't want the waste stored in their state.

There is one viable solution that is available today-nuclear energy. We should be producing 80 to 90% of our electricity with nuclear energy. Our vehicles will remain on oil for some time. The next thing we need to do is DRILL HERE and DRILL NOW!
Open the arctic for exploration. Open the continental shelf for exploration. We have more oil in shale under the Rockies than exist in the Middle East. Sure, one day we will develop technology that will allow us to move away from fossil fuel, but why destroy the economy even more, by trying to limit the US production and use.
